My Fellow American

Story Summary

A little girl turns a homeless veteran's life around with a simple hello.  Every day she and her big brother walk to school, passing by a homeless man, always keeping their distance from the other side of the street.  The girl notices people walk past the man, eyes forward, knowing he’s there but never seeing him.  The homeless man's name is William Harris, but everyone called him Willie.

Forced onto his side of the street one morning, she gives him an old coat of her fathers' that she was bringing for her school's clothing drive.  She and her brother convince their mom to let him come over to eat.  She at least let's him eat outside and gives him hot meal.  David, the brother, notices he shares the same tattoo on his arm that his dead father had.  They both were in the same unit in the Army.  Knowing he needs help and learning of his shared bond with their father, the children turn detective, contact his old platoon leader Johnny and explain Willie's situation.  Johnny comes to town and finds Willie at a local homeless shelter.  He walks through the rows and rows of cots, finds Willie, and calls him to attention.  He is there to help Willie get back on his feet.  They go to the VA and get Willie into a transitional work program and Johnny sets him up in his very own apartment.

Willie ends up with off the street and working a steady job, all thanks to the little girl giving him hope.  He returns to the place where he once slept on the street and waits for her to walk by on her way to school so that he can give his thanks, and return her fathers coat.

Just one simple act of kindness can change a life.  This film will portray that no matter who you are you can make a difference.  It might not be much effort for you, but to the person on the receiving end- it could change their life.

Veteran homelessness is an issue close to my heart, being a veteran myself.  If chosen, I will shoot this using an entire cast and crew of veterans from the group Veterans in Film and Television, Los Angeles.  There is a completed 14 page script, director, and producer attached to this project.
