Episode #001: Cinematographer Natalie Kingston

Kingston has done spots for brands like adidas, Duluth Trading Company, and Mass Mutual, and her work has been chosen as Official Selections at Tribeca, Raindance, and SXSW. She also spent most of 2021 shooting her biggest project yet—the acclaimed Apple TV+ crime drama, Black Bird.

In Episode #001 of the Musicbed Podcast, Kingston discusses navigating the Apple TV+ series Black Bird as a first-time DP, including the show’s accelerated interview and pre-production process, and 90+ day location shoot at Orleans Parish Prison:

“Even though it was an episodic project, it felt like we were making one very long feature on steroids. It’s the hardest, longest shoot I’ve ever done because it’s leveling up,” she tells Schultz. “But at the end of it, on day 95, I knew it’s where I belonged. I thought to myself—as hard as this was, this is exactly what I want to be doing. I was exhausted. Of course, I needed a break. But I was ready to do it again. I can’t wait to do it again.”

Hear more thoughts from Kingston as she discusses the value of trusting yourself when you’re up against the clock, advice for shooting with intention, getting the most from every rep, and more.

Episode #002: Director Eliot Rausch

Eliot Rausch is one of the most in-demand directors in the industry. He’s worked for brands from Apple to Google to Volvo, won at Canne Lion and Clio, worked alongside Alejandro González Iñárritu, and one of his films was even honored by Time Magazine as one of the most important moments of the year. His rise to acclaim was quick and unconventional, and his outlook remains undeniably unique.

In episode #002 of the Musicbed Podcast, Eliot offers creatives a master class in navigating the intersection of vulnerability and vision. Topics include finding acceptance as an outsider, overcoming imposter syndrome, and how he uses difficult raw emotions to his advantage.

Episode #003: Director Jared Malik Royal

Director Jared Malik Royal has worked for brands like Hypebeast, Mercedes-Benz, and Levi’s. He’s directed videos and teasers for artists Samm Henshaw, Daniel Caesar, Bryan Senti, and more.

In episode #003 of the Musicbed Podcast, Jared shares the value of staying present in an age of distractions. Topics include the real-life hope found in sci-fi world-building, the meaningful differences between art and content, and why creatives might be thinking the wrong way about AI.
